Russia's UEC Debuts 177S Fifth-Generation Aircraft Engine at China Airshow

Russia's United Engine Corporation (UEC) has chosen the international stage of Airshow China 2024 for the world premiere of its newest powerplant, the 177S, a fifth-generation engine designed to significantly extend the flight range of tactical aircraft while slashing operating costs.
The unveiling marks a significant step in showcasing Russia's domestic aerospace capabilities to a global audience. The 177S isn't just an incremental upgrade; it represents a leap in engine technology for tactical aviation. A core advantage, reported by the event's coverage, is its reduced fuel consumption across all flight conditions.
This efficiency directly translates to lower operating expenses and, crucially, provides a greater flight range, a critical tactical advantage. Furthermore, the engine is designed to supply increased power to avionic systems, ensuring that modern aircraft with their sophisticated sensors and electronics have the electrical backbone they need to perform.
But the 177S wasn't the only new engine on display. UEC's exposition also featured the first public full-size mockups of two other advanced engines: the AL-31FN Series 5 and the SM-100. These powerplants incorporate the advanced technologies and materials that define this new generation of propulsion.
The AL-31FN Series 5 is a notable evolution of the workhorse AL-31 family that powers multi-role fighters. This new version is specifically tailored for single-engine aircraft, a design focus that brings
with it increased reliability. How does it achieve this? The engine boasts a takeoff thrust increased to 14,000 kgf while simultaneously achieving a 6% reduction in fuel consumption. This powerful combination is engineered to expand an aircraft's operational range and altitude potential, giving pilots more flexibility and reach.
The technology demonstration extended beyond fighter jets. For the rotary-wing and civil sectors, UEC presented a full-size mockup of the new VK-1600V engine, developed to power medium-lift helicopters. Alongside it was the TV7-117ST-01 turboprop engine, a robust power source designed for regional aircraft.
