Raytheon, an RTX company, recently tested a new variant from its proven Coyote family of systems, launching it from a helicopter at the Nine Mile Training Center. This demonstration introduces a new capability for military forces to detect, identify, track, and neutralize battlefield threats.
The latest version, known as Coyote LE SR, belongs to the “launched effects” category of unmanned aerial systems—designed to be deployed from the air, land, or sea and capable of executing a wide range of missions. Earlier models have seen extensive use as counter-drone solutions, successfully downing hundreds of enemy drones. The LE SR variant expands on this by offering capabilities such as surveillance, reconnaissance, electronic warfare, precision strikes, and communications support.
“By enhancing the already battle-tested Coyote platform, this new version gives troops a vital edge in combat,” said Tom Laliberty, President of Land and Air Defense Systems at Raytheon. “Coyote LE SR is an affordable and adaptable system that helps military personnel stay ahead of fast-changing threats.”
This variant also incorporates collaborative autonomy, allowing it to work in coordination with nearby sensors and systems to adjust tactics and optimize mission performance based on real-time conditions.
The recent helicopter launch was the first of its kind for the Coyote system and adds to a growing series of successful demonstrations. More tests of the Coyote LE SR are scheduled throughout 2025.
