In a significant step toward strengthening global defense cooperation, Lockheed Martin and Diehl Defence have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing integrated air and missile defense (IAMD) capabilities for partner nations around the world.

This strategic alignment brings together two of the defense industry’s most respected innovators, combining expertise to deliver next-generation protection against evolving airborne threats.

Under this collaboration, both companies will explore integrating the IRIS-T missile family into several of Lockheed Martin’s advanced systems, including the Aegis Weapon System, as well as the MK 41 and MK 70 Vertical Launching Systems.

If successfully integrated, IRIS-T would become the first European missile to be incorporated into the Aegis combat system—marking a historic milestone for transatlantic defense cooperation and expanding the flexibility of Aegis-equipped platforms.

Executive Perspectives

“This strategic collaboration continues to showcase the scalability and increased capacity of our programs, which bring next-generation IAMD capability and 21st-century security worldwide,” said Chandra Marshall, vice president at Lockheed Martin.

“We have partnered with German industry for more than five decades, and we are proud to deepen our relationships by working with leading innovators such as Diehl Defence.”

Echoing this sentiment, Helmut Rauch, CEO of Diehl Defence, emphasized the powerful benefits that this partnership will bring to global naval forces. “With Diehl Defence and Lockheed Martin linking up their expertise and capabilities, navies around the globe can benefit from the optimum for air defence systems on their surface combat vessels. We are proud to intensify our collaboration with Lockheed Martin in the field of guided missiles and air defence applications.”

Beyond technical integration, the partnership represents an opportunity to strengthen industrial cooperation across continents. Lockheed Martin and Diehl Defence both maintain extensive global supply chains, and their collaboration stands to create new opportunities for jobs, investment, and technological innovation. By engaging local industries and suppliers, the companies aim to enhance economic resilience while contributing to long-term security for partner nations.

As airborne threats grow increasingly complex, advanced air and missile defense systems are becoming vital pillars of national and allied security. Through this MoU, Lockheed Martin and Diehl Defence reaffirm their shared commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions that empower nations to protect their citizens, infrastructure, and strategic interests well into the future.
