America’s largest shipbuilder and a leader in multi-domain technology solutions has surpassed the milestone of delivering over 700 REMUS uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) to clients worldwide, strengthening its dominance as the top global producer and providing strategic underwater capabilities.
“HII’s continued investment in advanced autonomous undersea systems is producing strong results, especially in demonstrating how these technologies can be integrated to meet the evolving and vital demands of our customers,” said HII President and CEO Chris Kastner.
“Whether for mine detection, anti-submarine operations, or securing critical waterways, the REMUS platform consistently supports the U.S. and allied maritime defense missions. Its proven reliability and versatility highlight HII’s commitment to offering innovative and dependable solutions to global partners.”
The REMUS line of UUVs offers key benefits for contemporary naval missions, including intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance, mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare, and electronic warfare. These autonomous platforms can function solo or alongside manned vessels — like the Virginia-class submarines — extending operational capability while minimizing detection and risk to personnel.
Over 700 REMUS uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) have been delivered to more than 30 nations, including 14 NATO allies. Impressively, more than 90% of these vehicles remain in active service even after 23 years, underscoring their resilience and ability to evolve alongside technological advancements.
HII is currently producing small uncrewed undersea vehicles (SUUVs) for the U.S. Navy as part of the Lionfish System program. This contract, which could expand to 200 units over a five-year period, holds a potential value exceeding $347 million. The Lionfish System is built on the REMUS 300 platform — a compact, modular, and open-architecture SUUV designed for flexibility in mission payloads.
In early 2022, the REMUS 300 made history as the first project selected by the Defense Innovation Unit to successfully transition to a formal program of record, earning its designation as the Navy’s next-generation SUUV under the Lionfish program.
Proven Performance in Global Operations
REMUS uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) have been utilized across a wide range of missions, from mine detection in the Persian Gulf to NATO drills in the North Sea and underwater surveillance operations in the Indo-Pacific region. Equipped with advanced sonar and sensor technologies, these systems significantly improve situational awareness and give naval forces a strategic advantage in challenging environments.
As undersea threats continue to develop, HII remains dedicated to advancing autonomous technologies that boost mission success and uphold maritime superiority. The delivery of over 700 REMUS units underscores HII’s position as a global leader in uncrewed systems and a reliable innovator in naval defense solutions.
Uncrewed Systems Enhancing Naval Operations
In mine countermeasure operations, REMUS plays a critical role in securing safe navigation for both military and commercial ships. The U.S. Navy has utilized REMUS in key maritime regions such as the Persian Gulf, the Baltic Sea, and the Black Sea, while NATO partners have incorporated the system in joint drills across areas like the Mediterranean, the North Sea, and the Arctic Circle.
HII’s Uncrewed Systems production facility in Pocasset, Massachusetts, employs modular and scalable manufacturing techniques to meet the rising demand across various product lines. This includes the 300-meter SUUV and the newly developed 600-meter REMUS 620 both designed as next-generation modular UUVs with simplified maintenance and customizable payloads tailored to specific missions.
As underwater threats grow more complex, REMUS continues to act as a strategic multiplier extending mission duration, enhancing efficiency, and reinforcing control in undersea operations. These advanced uncrewed systems mark a transformative shift in naval capabilities, providing a decisive technological edge in future maritime conflicts.
