HII (NYSE: HII) announced the successful launch of the future USS Jeremiah Denton (DDG 129) by its Ingalls Shipbuilding division today. This marks the third Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyer constructed at the facility.
To initiate the launch, shipbuilders moved DDG 129 from land to a dry dock using translation railcars that supported the vessel during transport. Once positioned in the dry dock, the destroyer was floated and guided by tugboats to a nearby pier.
“The successful launch of DDG 129 reflects the commitment and expertise of our Ingalls shipbuilders, as well as the strong partnership with the U.S. Navy,” said Ben Barnett, DDG Program Manager at Ingalls Shipbuilding. “The ship will now proceed to final outfitting, system activation, and testing ahead of joining the fleet.”
The DDG 129 is named in honor of former U.S. Senator Jeremiah Denton Jr., a decorated Vietnam War veteran who received the Navy Cross for his bravery while held as a prisoner of war. After retiring from the Navy, he was elected in 1980 to represent Alabama in the U.S. Senate.
As a Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, DDG 129 is equipped with the AN/SPY-6(V)1 Air and Missile Defense Radar (AMDR) and the advanced Aegis Baseline 10 Combat System—technology designed to counter evolving threats throughout the 21st century.
Ingalls Shipbuilding currently has five Flight III destroyers under construction: Ted Stevens (DDG 128), Jeremiah Denton (DDG 129), George M. Neal (DDG 131), Sam Nunn (DDG 133), and Thad Cochran (DDG 135).
