Hanwha Aerospace has taken another major step in strengthening its footprint in Europe’s defense market with the signing of a third contract with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA). The agreement, covering 24 additional K9 VIDAR self-propelled howitzers, underscores Norway’s continued confidence in the combat-proven K9 platform and marks a significant advancement in the long-term defense partnership between South Korea and Norway.

Contract Signing and Key Attendees

The signing ceremony took place in Oslo, attended by Jaeil Son, President and CEO of Hanwha Aerospace, along with key Norwegian defense representatives — Gro Jære, Director General of the NDMA; Major General Lars Lervik, Chief of the Norwegian Army; and Min-Jeong Seo, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Norway.

The event marked another milestone in the growing defense collaboration between South Korea and Norway, further strengthening ties within the NATO framework.

Enhancing Norway’s Artillery Capabilities

With this new order, Norway’s total K9 VIDAR fleet will expand to 52 systems, bolstering the nation’s long-range firepower and overall defense readiness. The follow-on contract comes after the Norwegian Army’s positive assessment of the K9 VIDAR’s operational performance and the successful delivery of earlier batches under previous agreements.

The additional systems are expected to enhance Norway’s artillery capabilities, ensuring the armed forces remain equipped with modern, combat-proven systems designed for Europe’s demanding defense environment.

Statements from Leadership

“We are proud to contribute once again to strengthening Norway’s sovereign defense capabilities,” said Jae-il Son, President and CEO of Hanwha Aerospace. “This contract reflects our mutual trust and continued cooperation with the Norwegian government and military. Moving forward, Hanwha aims to solidify its position as a strategic partner dedicated to reinforcing the defense capabilities of NATO allies and the broader European community.”

“I am very pleased that we have now signed a new contract with Hanwha,” added Gro Jære, Director General of the NDMA. “This agreement secures vital materiel for the Norwegian Armed Forces in line with our requirements for time, cost, and performance. Efficient processes and excellent cooperation with Hanwha have ensured that delivery of the additional 24 K9 artillery systems is already scheduled for 2027.”

Upgraded Systems and Local Cooperation

Under the new contract, the K9 VIDAR howitzers will feature an upgraded communications suite and full integration with Norway’s national combat system. Deliveries are expected to be completed by 2027.

The agreement also includes a comprehensive Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) package, encompassing training, maintenance, and technical support. Hanwha will work closely with local Norwegian industry partners to enhance long-term operational readiness and sustainability.

Strengthening Hanwha’s European Footprint

The latest contract underscores Hanwha Aerospace’s growing presence in Europe’s defense sector, positioning the company as a leading provider of advanced artillery systems. It also sets the stage for future cooperation within the Nordic region, with potential opportunities for expanding the export of other systems such as the Chunmoo Multiple Rocket Launcher System (MRLS).

Through consistent performance and strong partnerships, Hanwha Aerospace continues to play a pivotal role in supporting NATO’s collective defense and security goals.
