737 MAX order strengthens Canada’s largest single-aisle fleet commitment, powering WestJet’s growth plans
Calgary-based carrier set to double its 787 Dreamliner fleet, boosting global connectivity

Boeing and WestJet have announced a landmark agreement that will see the Canadian airline purchase 67 additional Boeing aircraft, marking the largest airplane order in WestJet’s history. With this latest deal, the airline’s total firm orders rise to 123 airplanes, reinforcing its strategy to expand both its domestic footprint and international network.
The new order—previously listed as “unidentified” on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website in June—comprises:
60 Boeing 737-10 jets with options for 25 more, and
Seven Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners with options for an additional four.
WestJet’s Growth Strategy
WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech highlighted how the acquisition supports the airline’s ambitious growth and modernization plans.
“With the addition of these aircraft, WestJet now holds the largest order book of any Canadian airline and will double our fleet of Dreamliners,” he said. “This underpins not only our long-term expansion strategy but also our commitment to providing affordable travel options for Canadians and exciting career opportunities for our people. These highly efficient and passenger-friendly aircraft are essential to renewing our fleet, while significantly improving our fuel consumption.”
The investment reflects WestJet’s dual priorities: meeting growing passenger demand and advancing its sustainability objectives by incorporating fuel-efficient models.
From Modest Beginnings to Industry Leader
WestJet’s story began in 1996 with just three Boeing 737s. Over nearly three decades, the airline has grown into one of Canada’s leading carriers, operating nearly 150 Boeing 737s today. This fleet allows WestJet to provide affordable and reliable connectivity across Canada and beyond.
The airline currently operates both the 737 MAX and the 787 Dreamliner on long-haul routes, linking Canadian travelers to destinations across Europe, Asia, and Latin America. With the new order, WestJet’s Dreamliner fleet will expand to 14 aircraft, enhancing its ability to serve an expanding global route network.
Boeing’s Perspective
Boeing executives welcomed the announcement as another milestone in a long-standing partnership.
“We are honored that WestJet has once again placed its trust in Boeing with a major investment that builds on our three decades of collaboration,” said Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “This deal solidifies their fleet strategy for decades to come, and we look forward to supporting WestJet’s exciting growth as they leverage the 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner to deliver efficiency, comfort, and affordability for their passengers.”
Efficiency and Passenger Experience
WestJet’s fleet is already among the youngest of North American carriers, with an average aircraft age of approximately 10 years. The new order strengthens this position while delivering important operational benefits.
The 737-10—the largest model in the 737 MAX family—offers the lowest cost per seat of any single-aisle jet, enabling WestJet to carry more passengers efficiently on high-demand routes. Meanwhile, the 787-9 Dreamliner provides unmatched fuel efficiency and prioritizes passenger comfort, offering spacious cabins, advanced air filtration systems, and reduced noise levels. Together, these aircraft types support WestJet’s strategy of balancing operational commonality with passenger satisfaction.
Boeing’s Global Role
As the world’s leading aerospace manufacturer and a top U.S. exporter, Boeing designs, builds, and services commercial airplanes, defense platforms, and space systems for customers in over 150 countries. The company emphasizes innovation, sustainability, and community impact, supported by a vast U.S. and international workforce and supplier network.
Boeing’s commitment to safety, quality, and integrity underpins every aspect of its operations, making it a trusted partner for airlines like WestJet as they expand fleets and enhance services.
Looking Ahead
For WestJet, this record-setting order represents more than just an expansion of its fleet—it signals confidence in the airline’s long-term vision. By doubling its Dreamliner fleet and adding dozens of next-generation 737s, the carrier is preparing to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving aviation market while maintaining its reputation for affordability and reliability.
With its largest-ever order now in place, WestJet is positioned to grow as a stronger competitor in both domestic and international markets, while continuing to deliver on its promise of connecting Canadians to the world.
