The New BMW R 1300 R: A Sharper, More Dynamic Roadster with Boxer Engine
The new BMW R 1300 R takes the dynamic roadster concept to the next level, with significant technical and visual upgrades. It boasts a more aggressive and athletic design, highlighted by bold, dynamic styling and offered in four distinct model variants.
The primary aim in developing the R 1300 R was to enhance both its performance and visual appeal. The result is a more assertive, sport-oriented roadster. The Performance variant, for example, includes advanced features such as a sport suspension, shorthand levers, milled and adjustable footrests, DTC-Shift, two additional sport windscreens, a sport seat, engine spoiler, and sport tires—giving riders the ability to further elevate the bike's dynamic performance.
Despite its sportier edge, the R 1300 R remains a practical and comfortable choice for everyday use and touring. Options like seat heating, the Riding Assistant, a windscreen, and various luggage systems ensure the bike can be customized to meet a wide range of rider preferences.
The base model is available in Snapper Rocks metallic, while other variants include the Exclusive version in Racing Blue metallic, the high-performance Performance variant in Lightwhite uni, and the premium Option 719 Kilauea in Blackstorm metallic.
Sporty Ergonomics and Features for Both Dynamic Riding and Touring Comfort
The BMW Motorrad team aimed to make the new BMW R 1300 R noticeably sportier and more dynamic than its predecessor. This objective is reflected not only in the bike’s design, engine, and chassis but also in its ergonomics, which prioritize a more engaged and athletic riding posture.
To achieve this, the ergonomic layout—comprising the handlebars, footrests, and seat—has been carefully designed to position the rider significantly further forward over the front wheel. This is accomplished through slightly rear-set footrests and flatter handlebars, enhancing front-end feedback, especially during spirited riding, and offering improved control.
Despite its sportier stance, the seating arrangement still supports comfortable touring and cruising, including when riding with a passenger. For added comfort, optional Comfort handlebars are also available.
Customizable Seating and Innovative Luggage Solutions for Comfortable Touring
A variety of seat options ensures the ideal seat height for different riders, while a newly designed luggage system—featuring electrified panniers and a smart tank bag—makes the BMW R 1300 R perfectly suited for long-distance touring and holiday adventures.
BMW’s boxer-engine roadsters have long been popular among female riders and returning motorcyclists, largely due to their approachable design and low seat height. Continuing this tradition, the development of the new R 1300 R placed strong emphasis on achieving a seat height well below 790 mm. Alongside the standard seat, several other seat variants are available as optional factory-fitted equipment.
For added touring convenience, the R 1300 R can be equipped with a newly developed luggage system and case holders from the BMW Motorrad Original Accessories range—or with factory-installed preparation for the case system. The cases offer 26 and 29 liters of storage capacity, are electrified, and can be operated via the central locking system. They also include interior lighting, with the left-side case featuring a built-in USB-C charging port.
The redesigned tank bag is another highlight. It attaches via a tank ring—completely strap-free—for added ease of use and functionality.
Powerful Boxer Engine with Enhanced Torque, Smoothness, and Efficiency
The new BMW R 1300 R features a robust boxer engine with a displacement of exactly 1,300 cc. The revised bore-to-stroke ratio is 106.5 mm by 73 mm—an update from the previous model's 102.5 mm by 76 mm—achieved through a larger cylinder bore and a shorter-stroke crankshaft.
This reengineered engine delivers 107 kW (145 hp) at 7,750 rpm, surpassing the previous model’s 100 kW (136 hp), and generates a peak torque of 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm (previously 143 Nm at 6,250 rpm). With a redline of 9,000 rpm, this makes it the most powerful production boxer engine BMW has ever built, offering improved smoothness, responsiveness, and fuel efficiency.
Three Standard Riding Modes with Optional Pro Upgrade and Engine Drag Torque Control
The new BMW R 1300 R comes equipped with three standard riding modes—“Rain,” “Road,” and “Eco”—enabling the bike to adapt effectively to a variety of road conditions and rider preferences. The “Eco” mode optimizes fuel efficiency by utilizing BMW’s ShiftCam technology to maximize range.
For enhanced customization, the optional Riding Modes Pro package is available from the factory. This includes two additional modes—“Dynamic” and “Dynamic Pro”—and allows riders to pre-select a preferred set of modes using the riding mode button. This feature enables quick and easy switching between individually configured modes while on the move.
Also included as standard is Engine Drag Torque Control (MSR), which helps maintain stability during coasting or aggressive downshifting by reducing rear-wheel slip. In such situations, MSR automatically adjusts the throttle valves to balance engine braking and keep the bike stable.
Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) with Fully Automatic Clutch and Optional Manual or Automatic Gear Shifting
BMW Motorrad introduces the innovative Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) as optional equipment, designed to enhance comfort and simplify the riding experience. With fully automatic clutch control and the ability to switch between manual and automatic gear shifting, ASA aligns with the philosophy of "Simplify your Ride." This system allows riders to focus more on the road and the experience, without compromising the dynamic feel of traditional gear changes.
All-New Chassis with Steel Sheet Main Frame and Aluminum Rear Frame
The chassis of the BMW R 1300 R has been fully redesigned from the ground up. At its core is a newly developed steel sheet main frame, which not only improves packaging efficiency for a more compact layout but also provides greater rigidity compared to the previous model. As part of this overhaul, the traditional tubular steel rear frame has been replaced with a lightweight die-cast aluminum structure.
Paired with a more compact engine design, this new chassis layout shifts mass closer to the bike’s center of gravity—resulting in improved handling dynamics. The R 1300 R now offers enhanced stability under braking, requires less rider input, and delivers sharper, more responsive suspension performance for a more engaging and confident ride.
Innovative Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) with Adaptive Damping, Spring Rate, and Load Compensation
Available as optional equipment, the new electronic Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) enhances performance by dynamically adjusting both damping and spring rate, along with automatic load compensation. The BMW R 1300 R becomes the world’s first production motorcycle to feature an upside-down telescopic fork with adjustable spring stiffness.
While the standard Dynamic ESA already delivers excellent safety and ride comfort by automatically adjusting damping and rear spring preload based on terrain, the DSA system goes a step further. It adapts both front and rear suspension settings—including spring stiffness—in real time, depending on the selected riding mode, road conditions, and rider input.
Thanks to DSA, the R 1300 R offers even more precise handling, greater stability, and improved cornering performance with increased lean angle clearance.
First-Ever Electrically Unlocking Navigation Mount for Enhanced Convenience
For the first time, the navigation preparation available as optional factory equipment now includes an electrically operated locking system, offering maximum ease of use. This feature enables quick and secure mounting of a navigation device or smartphone via a cradle—without the need for a physical key, enhancing both comfort and convenience.
Extensive Customization Options for the New BMW R 1300 R
A wide range of optional equipment and genuine BMW Motorrad accessories is available, allowing riders to personalize and tailor the new BMW R 1300 R to their specific needs and preferences.
